Thoughts are constantly playing out in our heads. But some of these thoughts are not only disturbing but also tend to leave a bad feeling long after they are gone.

These are the notorious bad and negative thoughts that almost all of us have experienced sometime or the other in our lifetimes.

Let me be honest and tell you right at the outset that it’s definitely not an easy task to completely eliminate negative thoughts, but it’s not impossible either.

If someone counsels you to quit thinking about negative stuff and thereby get rid of them, I would like to remind you of Newton’s third law.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so the more vigorously you try to stop thinking negative thoughts, more forceful is their comeback. Not a great idea, if you ask me!

Tackle Negative Thoughts

You cannot stop thoughts at your will and wish but you surely could try another roundabout approach. It’s obvious that these recurring bad thoughts are coming to visit you because of some reason. Why not tackle the reason/ cause instead of the effect?

Okay, so you got to do this- get a notepad and a pen. Make 2 columns on the page by drawing a line through the middle. Now label the left column as thoughts and right one as reasons.

Next you have to carefully write down each negative thought and number them properly. Make sure that you write down the probable reason / cause for each of your thoughts in the corresponding row on the right column.

Useful Tip: Spend some time and effort in reflecting over and pin-pointing the right reason behind every negative thought.

 

The Tough Part is Over!

Needless to say, the previous step is the hardest of all. Now comes the easier ones. You will again divide the page into two columns and mark the left as reasons and the right one as solutions.

You’ll now copy down all of the reasons from the right column on to the left column and number it like you did previously. Now write down solutions that you think are the best to tackle each of the reasons.

Useful Tip: When writing down solutions, imagine that your best friend / child / a loved one is facing the problem and you are suggesting effective solutions to their problems.

This helps in detaching your mind from your emotions and sentiments and spurs logical thinking.

The Lord Almighty has bestowed all of us with a powerful mind; if only each one of us would realize this. Dip into the resources of your powerhouse to find effective resolutions.

No It’s Not Pack-up Time Yet!

Jotting down some words on paper is not going to help any of your problems. If you want to get rid of negative thoughts without visiting a shrink or a psychotherapist, then you need to act upon your ideas. By ideas I mean the solutions that you wrote down against each reason.

Take action and start completing each task. Do not be lazy or bored and leave things halfway. No matter how slow things may seem at first, if you can ensure consistency, you will definitely see results.

In no time you’ll observe that unwanted visits by your negative thoughts keep getting rarer and rarer until they disappear altogether. That’s not all; you’ll certainly experience a new found positivity and contentment.

In case you are still skeptical, you’ll surely believe when your family, friends and colleagues start noticing and mentioning about the radiant positive aura that you have started to emanate!
